There is Languedoc. And then there is Montcalmès.

For years, people who know wine have treated this estate like a southern insider secret. Small production. Obsessive vineyard work. A style closer to the precision of the Rhône than the stereotype of “big sunny south”.

Montcalmès Rouge 2022 comes from Terrasses du Larzac.

The blend is classic but serious:

60% Syrah

20% Mourvèdre

20% Grenache

Here is the part most people do not know. They plant each grape where it makes the most sense. Syrah and Grenache on a north facing limestone plateau in Puéchabon for tension and lift. Mourvèdre on rolled pebbles near Aniane for depth and spice. Biodynamic practices.

In the cellar it is not “southern sweetness”

Native yeasts. About 30 days maceration. Then 24 months in older barrels. No filtering.

What you get in the glass:

Black fruit and cherry. Garrigue, cacao, a mineral edge. Tannins with grain, not weight.

This is why we pour it by the glass at Gụ. It drinks beautifully now. And it still tastes like a wine you could cellar. Try it with our Lamb Belly Ratatouille, Boeuf Bourguigon or our top Steak Frites. Ask for Montcalmès Rouge 2022 by the glass tonight.
